Western South Dakota Community Action offers several home repair programs. Use the following information and initial application below to explore qualification and assistance for weatherization improvements, older adult home modifications, and healthy home assessments.
The Department of Energy (DOE)'s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)
The WAP helps low-income households reduce energy costs by improving the energy efficiency of their homes.
Areas of Focus:

Lowering heating and cooling bills.

Improving health and safety.
-
Providing upgrades at no cost to the household.
Program Highlights:
-
Average annual savings: $372 or more per household.
-
Common measures include insulation, air sealing, and heating system improvements.
-
About 32,000 homes are weatherized each year using DOE funds.

Housing & Urban Development (HUD)'s Older Adults Home Modification Program (OAHMP)
The OAHMP helps low-income seniors (62+) age in place by funding low-cost, high-impact home modifications that reduce fall risks, improve safety, and increase accessibility.
Typical Modifications:

grab bars, handrails, lever-handle faucets, handheld shower heads
-
raised toilet seats, non-slip flooring, improved lighting
-
temporary ramps, tub/shower transfer benches
Goals:
-
Prevent injuries, maintain independence, avoid costly relocations and moving expenses.

Housing & Urban Development (HUD)'s Healthy Homes Production Grant (HHPG)
The HHPG addresses housing-related health and safety hazards in low-income homes, especially where children, older adults, or persons with disabilities live.
Hazards Addressed:

lead-based paint, mold/moisture, pests
-
radon, carbon monoxide, poor ventilation
-
unsafe electrical systems
Outcomes:
-
Remediation, removal, or repair of severe health risks in the home.
